A proper formation departure from Zürich. Over the Jura and straight across Geneva to the first customs stop — not Lyon (everyone already knew it) but the quieter Saint-Étienne, with a brisk IFR approach and a grandstand view of the traffic. On to Mende-Brenoux, the “aircraft carrier of France" at 3,362 ft on the edge of a high plateau — demanding in the thermals and wind, with an air-rescue base and a small refreshment corner. After a crew change, Toulouse-Francazal, where the boneyard theme started with no prompting: rows of brand-new Airbus A220s that can't fly without their Pratt & Whitney engines. In the afternoon the Aeroscopia museum — though the real highlight was a brand-new Beluga taking off right in front of us.

After a good breakfast, the guided tour at Aura Aero, founded in 2018 by ex-Airbus engineers on the former Francazal military base: lots of wood, lots of carbon, lots of handwork. Then off toward the Pyrenees with both Diamonds, first stop Tarbes-Lourdes — another airliner storage yard. Then the best part of the day: the leap across the Pyrenees to Santa Cilia de Jaca, a gliding mecca in the Aragonese Pyrenees — with a restaurant, terrace and pool between runway and apron. A well-earned lunch, a jump into the cool water, then on to the day's destination: Teruel.

Teruel → Lleida → Sabadell
LETLLEDALELL
Teruel sits in the middle of the Spanish emptiness and is exactly what this trip was for: one of Europe's largest aircraft storage yards — and, despite all the widebodies, an uncontrolled field flown VFR. On the ground several British Airways 747s and a Lufthansa A380 visibly on its last breath; our Diamonds were tied down for the night right behind a jet awaiting its conversion to a freighter. In the morning the official tour with the University of Zaragoza (Alejandro Ibrahim): paint stations, new hangars — though the real highlight for the students was sitting in a DA40. A formation departure to say goodbye, two low passes for the video, then via Lleida-Alguaire (a contender for Spain's least friendly airfield) to Sabadell. Nobody went into Barcelona — the Tour de France Grand Départ had the city fully booked.

Everyone knew this would be the hardest leg: VFR coastal routes along Spain and France, mostly around 1,500 ft above the ground, at 28–35 °C with plenty of thermals and headwind. Near Le Castellet the next surprise — the field requires a PPR we could never make sense of, so no landing. After a few holds it became Aix-les-Milles (tower unmanned over midday, radio French only). Then the day's redeeming field: Aosta, beautifully set and ideal for customs, with panini and lemon soda as the base for the final push over the Matterhorn back to Zürich. There a very busy home airport greeted us — up to 45 minutes of holding — and, to finish, a highlight: inbound VFR via Route Echo and the H1 approach, slotting neatly between the departing airliners.

One of the more interesting stories in European light aviation: founded in 2018 by ex-Airbus engineers on the former Francazal military base. Its first product is the two-seat INTEGRAL, a wood-and-carbon aerobatic and training aircraft, now EASA-certified. The bigger goal behind it: the ERA, a 19-seat hybrid-electric regional — and by now even drone projects. Lots of handwork, lots of wood combined with modern materials; a young, dynamic company mid-leap toward IFR aircraft and commercial aviation. Sadly there wasn't time for a test flight.

One of Europe's largest aircraft storage yards: long-term parking, teardown and repainting of airliners. The curiosity: for all its widebodies, Teruel is an uncontrolled field — flown VFR. Picture a 777 self-announcing into the pattern. And Teruel is more than its boneyard: the town sits prettily on a hill above a gorge, one of those places you'd otherwise almost never reach. Worth the detour on its own.

In Spain some fields (for example Lleida-Alguaire and Sabadell) require your name and ID number in the remarks field of the flight plan — miss it and you'll lose time on the ground. Le Castellet (LFMQ) requires a PPR that's hard to make sense of from the available documentation; no PPR, no landing. And at Aix-les-Milles the tower is unmanned over midday — radio is then French only.

What stays with you are the images above all: rows of parked A220s in Toulouse, a Beluga taking off, the wood-and-carbon build at Aura Aero, lunch with a pool above the Pyrenees and of course Teruel with its enormous boneyard and the little town above the gorge. Places a private pilot otherwise never gets to see — all strung together across a few days. Add the legs that didn't go to plan: a few idiosyncratic airfields, a demanding trip home. In the end everyone was glad there was always a second pilot on board. That's exactly what fly-outs are for: the big impressions — and the stories you bring back from the detour.
